46233 Duchess of Sutherland crosses the Birmingham & Worcester canal and passes through the Remains of Lifford station on 5Z33 Crewe - Kidderminster

The Duchess was moving to the Severn Valley Railway as a visiting loco for this weekends Autumn Steam Gala.

Lifford station on the Camp Hill line closed as an economy measure for World War II and never reopened, however there is more railway history in this shot, the wharf on the opposite bank of the canal is the original alignment of the Birmingham West Suburban Railway with it's own Lifford Wharf station in the vicinity, the line was later rebuilt to a better alignment along what is now the Cross City Line between Bourneville and Kings Norton station.

The brickwork on the side of the embankment is rather curious, remnants of a foot connection between the Birmingham & Gloucester and Suburban Railway alignments perhaps ?.

The main reason for choosing this spot was to hide the fact it was a light engine move with a single coach.
